For the lover of the great outdoors, a stay at Carterside Cottages puts the many delights of the Northumbrian countryside at your very doorstep.

 

The bustling village of Rothbury is just a short stroll away with a wide selection of tea-rooms, shops and restaurants (including the Co-op which is open for provisions until 10pm). Many of the smaller shops offer special regional products and gifts, allowing you to sample the best of the region.

 

For a true taste of Northumbria, why not sample the culinary delights by arranging a private dinner party at your cottage from Wilkins Fine Dining, take a trip down to Rothbury Wines to find the perfect drink to compliment your meal and you can also take a taste of the county home with you by visiting one of the best butchers in the country, Rothbury Family Butchers (you can also buy online!)

The River Coquet is one of England’s finest salmon and sea trout rivers with both Spring and Autumn runs to test those in pursuit of the King of fish. The river also boasts impressive native brown trout stocks with some of the best stretches a leisurely stroll from Carterside Cottages. Season and Day tickets are available. For the stillwater fisherman there are many fantastic stretches of water to challenge and excite; from the scenic Caistron Fishery nestled at the foot of the Simonside Hills (10 minutes drive) to the big fish water of Fontburn Reservoir (15 minutes drive) - both of which can be fished by fly or worm. Fly fishing tuition is available from Kevin Dawson, all experience levels welcome.

 

The Jinty Painting School, owned and run by Janet and John Canning, is situated a short drive away from Carterside Cottages, the school exists to encourage, educate and, most importantly, inspire you to paint, why not take a look at their website and book yourself a lesson.

 

The heather clad Simonside Hills provide a dramatic backdrop to Rothbury and are a have for walkers, mountain bikers and lovers of wildlife. Put on your walking boots and head for the hills with Shepherds Walks! Simonside is dotted with signs of  human habitation dating back to prehistoric times. Some of the most spectacular examples of mysterious prehistoric rock art known as Cup & Ring Marked rocks in the country are located at Lordenshaws, a small hill with spectacular views over the village.

 

From many of the cottages, you can see the distant hills of the Cheviot Hills which separate England from Scotland and are one of the must visit destinations for the keen walker. “The Land of the Far Horizons” the Cheviot range offers mile upon mile of stunning natural landscapes where you’re more likely to encounter a wild goat than another person! Northumberland provides the nature lover with one of the best chances to observe the country's rarest wildlife at first hand. The nearby village of Rothbury provides a host of shops, restaurants and traditional pubs. Rothbury has a very particular charm and character which many people find addictive.

 

Nearby is the National Trust property of Cragside House and gardens. Once the home of the great Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong, Cragside was the first home ever to be lit by hydro-electric power. The house and magnificent gardens are open to visitors.

 

Further afield, great days out include; The Alnwick Garden – Spectacular contemporary garden in the nearby (20 mins) market town of Alnwick , Holy Island & the Northumberland coast – Breathtaking! (approx 1 hour), Castles, castles and more castles! Dotted throughout the county, Hadrian’s Wall (1 hour), Berwick upon Tweed & the Borders (1 hour) – Historic walled town and the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne (45 mins) with great restaurants, theatres, galleries and legendary nightlife.

 

A short drive to the east (25 minutes) brings you to the spectacular Northumbrian coast with rugged rocky outcrops and mile upon mile of golden sandy beaches. The traditional seaside villages have a charm of their own including Alnmouth, so pretty, Queen Victoria was reputed to slow her train down on her way past, just so she could get a better view!
